Rough night across the board. We went 0-3 for -3.45u on Mets/Brewers, Nationals/Rockies, and Reds/Mariners.

Zac Thornton was the story nobody saw coming in Milwaukee. The Mets rookie went six innings while the bullpen closed it out with a four-hitter to blank the Brewers 4-0, snapping Milwaukee’s four-game winning streak. Jared Young got New York on the board with a solo homer in the second, and the Mets broke it open in the fifth when a two-out throwing error and a Turang misplay let Francisco Lindor and Carson Benge’s double bring home two more. Luis Robert Jr. added a thundering 451-foot homer in the eighth, his first hit since returning from a back injury that cost him nearly three months. Brandon Sproat, making his first career start against the organization that drafted him, lasted only four and two-thirds and was tagged with the loss.

Colorado did the damage late against Washington. CJ Abrams went deep twice, his third straight game with a homer, and it still wasn’t enough. Hunter Goodman’s tie-breaking homer in the eighth, his 31st of the year, put the Rockies ahead for good in an 8-7 win. Nationals starter Miles Mikolas didn’t make it out of the fourth, charged with three earned runs on six hits.

Seattle couldn’t solve Chase Burns. The Reds’ righthander, fresh off agreeing to a $105 million extension over the weekend, worked five scoreless innings and Eugenio Suarez took his old team deep in the fourth, a solo shot that put him in a tie with Eric Davis for 10th on Cincinnati’s all-time home run list. Elly De La Cruz added a leadoff homer of his own. Seattle got solo shots from Weston Wilson and Julio Rodriguez late, and while Luis Castillo went seven innings, a season-high, it wasn’t enough to save it, and the Mariners fell 4-2.

American Family Field, Milwaukee, WI - TV: SNY, BREW

We covered yesterday’s matchup above, something we’d prefer to soon forget. Tonight’s game is the rubber match. Christian Scott takes the ball for New York at 3-1 with a 2.87 ERA, opposite Logan Henderson for Milwaukee, who sits at the same 3-1 mark with a 2.97 ERA. Neither pitcher has faced the other club yet this year. Scott has been one of the positives on this roster. Over his last two starts he hasn’t allowed a run and he’s part of a trio with Zac Thornton and Nolan McLean that’s been keeping the Mets afloat even as the club finds themselves nine and a half games out of a playoff spot and last in the NL East. Henderson’s coming off a no-decision Friday against Miami, five innings and just one run allowed in a game the Brewers won in extras. The Brewers still have one of the best records in baseball at 63-38 and they’re 18-8 on the year when they hit at least two homers, while the Mets improved to 43-59 with last night’s win.

Chase Field, Phoenix, AZ - TV: NBC Sports California, ARID

This series has gone back and forth. The Diamondbacks won a wild one Tuesday, 6-5 in 10 innings, after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth. Max Kepler’s three-run homer in the first put Arizona up early, Ketel Marte added a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 cushion, and closer Paul Sewald got two outs in the ninth before Donovan Walton tripled and Jacob Wilson tied it with a two-run homer. The A’s briefly took the lead in the tenth on a Jonah Heim sac fly before Arizona walked it off on singles from Nolan Arenado and Ildemaro Vargas.

Gage Jump takes the ball for Oakland tonight at 3-5 with a 3.78 ERA, opposite Merrill Kelly for Arizona at 7-8 with a 5.20 ERA. The Athletics have been brutal on the road this stretch, dropping to 43-58 overall, and they’re also down a piece of their infield after Joshua Kuroda-Grauer went on the injured list Tuesday following a ruptured testicle suffered in Monday’s game. Arizona placed Drey Jameson on the 15-day IL with hip inflammation the same day. Arizona sits at 52-49, second in the NL West.

Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA - TV: TBS, MLB.TV

Max Muncy’s two-run homer off Zack Wheeler in the fourth was the difference Tuesday, and Justin Wrobleski worked into the seventh to hold Philadelphia to one run in a 2-1 Dodgers win that snapped a two-game skid. Alec Bohm’s RBI single had given the Phillies an early 1-0 lead, and Tanner Scott had to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his 15th save, getting help when the Phillies ran themselves into two outs at the plate on the same play.

Aaron Nola takes the ball for Philadelphia tonight in the finale at 3-7 with a 5.68 ERA, opposite Eric Lauer for the Dodgers at 4-5 with a 4.81 ERA. Los Angeles improved to 64-38 with the win, still comfortably ahead in the NL West, while Philadelphia sits at 56-46.

Rogers Centre, Toronto, ON - TV: Sportsnet, Rays.TV, TVA Sports

Tampa Bay has run through Toronto the last two nights. The Rays put up a season-high 21 hits Tuesday, with Nick Fortes and Yandy Diaz both hitting three-run homers in a 12-2 rout that gave Tampa Bay a 2-0 series lead. The Rays also now lead the season series 7-1. Fortes finished with four RBIs, Chandler Simpson and Ben Williamson each had four hits of their own.

Toronto has lost six of seven.

Griffin Jax gets the ball for Tampa Bay tonight at 5-7 with a 4.08 ERA. Toronto goes with Braydon Fisher, who’s working as an opener rather than a traditional starter, part of how the Jays have deployed him across 41 relief outings and six starts this year; he comes in at 3-3 with a 3.65 ERA, 50 strikeouts and 22 walks on the season. The Rays sit at 58-42, first in the AL East, while the Blue Jays have fallen to 46-55 and dropped to last in the division.

Truist Park, Atlanta, GA - TV: SDPA, BravesVision

Manny Machado carried San Diego on Tuesday, hitting a pair of solo homers, a couple 400 footers to left and center, to help even this series at a game apiece with an 8-3 win. Jackson Merrill added a solo shot to spark a three-run fourth, and Fernando Tatis Jr. capped it with a 474-foot blast in the eighth, the longest home run in the majors this season. Walker Buehler settled in after a shaky start to work five and two-thirds for the win.

Michael King takes the ball for San Diego tonight at 6-7 with a 3.34 ERA. Atlanta gets a big piece back, with Martin Perez returning from the injured list to start for the first time since being struck by a Juan Soto line drive on July 5. Perez is 6-6 with a 3.54 ERA on the year but will be making his return without a rehab start, so his workload may be managed. Atlanta’s bullpen is still without Robert Suarez, out with an elbow injury, and Ha-Seong Kim remains on the 10-day IL with a finger issue. San Diego sits at 50-51, Atlanta at 58-42.
