Atlanta ML (-132) was the play, and the Braves got it done in a tight one to open their series with San Diego.

Manny Machado opened the game with a bunt single in the first, then gave the Padres the lead for real in the fourth with his 20th homer of the year, a 402-foot shot that made it 1-0. But, Atlanta answered right back as Michael Harris II tied it with an 18th-homer solo shot in the fifth followed by Mauricio Dubon reaching on catcher’s interference then scored on a Joey Bart double, the Braves had a 2-1 lead. Ozzie Albies made it 3-1 in the sixth with his 15th homer, his first since July 3. Ty France wouldn’t let San Diego go away quietly, cutting it to 3-2 with a solo shot in the seventh that also stretched his hitting streak to eight games, but that’s as close as it got. Bryce Elder picked up the win going six innings with two runs allowed, five hits, four strikeouts while Victor Mederos worked the final two and a third for his first career save. The Padres JP Sears took the loss.

American Family Field, Milwaukee, WI - TV: SNY, BREW

Milwaukee made Freddy Peralta’s return to town a rough one Monday. The Brewers jumped him for five runs over the first three innings on four extra-base hits, including Cooper Pratt’s first career homer as part of his first career three-hit game, and Joey Ortiz added a three-run shot of his own as Milwaukee rolled to an 8-3 win. Peralta, who was traded to New York for Brandon Sproat back in January, went five and a third and was charged with seven runs in the loss and now sits at 5-9 on the season.

Jacob Misiorowski made his first start since July 7 for the Brewers, working around an arm fatigue scare that had him scratched from his previous turn, and came out sharp, four innings, one unearned run, six strikeouts on just 65 pitches. Milwaukee improved to 63-37, their fourth straight win, and passed the Dodgers for the best record in baseball.

New York, now 42-59, sends Zach Thornton to the mound tonight at 0-1 with a 2.60 ERA. He draws Sproat, who’s 3-4 with a 5.16 ERA and gets his first look at his old organization since the trade that sent Peralta the other way.

Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY - TV: SNP, YES

Jazz Chisholm Jr. did the damage for New York on Monday, going deep twice against All-Star righty Braxton Ashcraft, including a three-run shot in the first that staked the Yankees to an early 4-0 lead, and finishing with five RBI in an 8-5 win. Ashcraft was tagged for a career-high eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits over just three innings, his second straight rough outing; he’s now allowed 13 runs across his last two starts combined. Esmerlyn Valdez went deep for Pittsburgh, his 13th of the year. Things got heated late when Pirates reliever Dennis Santana got into it with Jose Caballero after an inning-ending double play in the eighth, though both benches emptied without any punches thrown.

Pittsburgh, now 52-49, turns to Bubba Chandler tonight at 3-8 with a 4.77 ERA. He’s opposed by Will Warren for the Yankees, who sits at 7-4 with a 4.03 ERA.

Fenway Park, Boston, MA - TV: MASN, NESN

Caleb Durbin’s go-ahead homer over the Green Monster with two outs in the eighth snapped a 5-5 tie and lifted Boston to a 6-5 win Monday, stretching the Red Sox’s winning streak to 14 games, the second-longest in franchise history and one shy of the 1946 club record. It also ended Baltimore’s own streak at seven. Christian Encarnacion-Strand, up from Triple-A for just four days, homered and added an RBI single for the Orioles, but it wasn’t enough. Garrett Whitlock picked up the win with a perfect eighth, and Aroldis Chapman closed it out for his 22nd save. Boston starter Payton Tolle went five and two-thirds, allowing four runs on nine strikeouts, while Baltimore’s Shane Baz matched him with six innings and four runs of his own.

Boston goes for a club-record-tying 15th straight win tonight and gets a boost doing it: Ranger Suarez is back off the injured list to start for the Red Sox, sporting a 3.15 ERA on the year. Baltimore counters with Kyle Bradish, who sits at 6-8 with a 3.61 ERA.

Coors Field, Denver, CO - TV: NATS, COLR

Washington’s power carried the day Monday. Andres Chaparro’s three-run homer in the first got things started, and the Nationals hit three home runs as a team in a 6-3 win that pushed them past the Yankees for the most team homers in the majors. Washington improved to 51-50, while Colorado fell to 40-62.

Miles Mikolas takes the ball for the Nationals tonight at 3-7 with a 5.53 ERA, though that number undersells how he’s pitched lately. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in four of his last seven outings and has struck out 14 against just four walks over his last 38 innings dating back to June 8. Michael Lorenzen goes for Colorado at 3-9 with a 6.22 ERA.

T-Mobile Park, Seattle, WA - TV: CINR, SEAM

Cal Raleigh’s sixth career grand slam turned a close game into a laugher Monday, part of a five-RBI night as the Mariners blew it open with a six-run seventh in an 8-0 win over Cincinnati. George Kirby was outstanding ahead of it, six innings, six strikeouts, just one walk, needing only 80 pitches for his sixth straight quality start. Andrew Abbott didn’t allow an earned run in six innings for the Reds, but the bullpen surrendered seven runs over the final two frames and he was tagged with the loss anyway. Seattle improved to 51-50, above .500 for the first time in nearly two weeks, and moved a half-game up on Texas atop the AL West.

It’s worth noting tonight that Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford was a late scratch Monday with wrist soreness and is considered day-to-day.

Chase Burns takes the mound for Cincinnati tonight, and he’s been one of the best stories in baseball this year at 11-1 with a 2.54 ERA. He’s opposed by Luis Castillo for Seattle, who sits at 3-8 with a 4.93 ERA.
