Milwaukee was our play Sunday, and they made us wait for it.

Miami grabbed a run in the top of the third and made it stand up all the way into the ninth, with Eury Perez and the bullpen behind him holding the Brewers off the board through eight full innings. Milwaukee finally broke through when William Contreras turned around a Pete Fairbanks offering for a three-run homer that flipped a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 walk-off win. Everything before that ninth inning was one long hold-your-breath watch, but the number cashed where it mattered.

That capped a four-game set that got away from Miami in a hurry, with the Brewers taking three of four and doing damage in bunches during the two wins in the middle of the series.

We’ll take it and move on to today’s slate.

Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH - TV: CLEG, MNNT

Both of these clubs got run over on Sunday. Minnesota went to Wrigley and got buried 10-1. Shota Imanaga threw seven shutout innings, allowing six hits and a walk, and Alex Bregman opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first before Nico Hoerner broke the game open with a bases-loaded triple in an eight-run third that chased Zebby Matthews, who was charged with 10 runs, eight of them earned, on nine hits in only three innings of work.

Cleveland’s afternoon wasn’t any prettier. Paul Skenes went seven innings, allowed one run on seven hits, and struck out eight to beat the Guardians 7-1 and complete a Pittsburgh sweep. Billy Cook had a career-high three hits and drove in two, Nick Gonzales added two doubles, and Esmerlyn Valdez capped it with a two-run homer in the ninth, his seventh straight game with an extra-base hit and an RBI.

Joe Ryan takes the ball for the Twins tonight at 6-5 with a 2.85 ERA, and he’s been the one consistent piece in a rotation that’s had its share of trouble. Tanner Bibee goes for Cleveland at 3-9, but that record is doing him no favors. His 3.90 ERA says he’s a pitcher who’s been getting hung out to dry by a lineup that isn’t scoring for him. Minnesota sits at 49-51, third in the AL Central, three games back of a Cleveland club at 52-48 that’s dropped four of five and now trails Chicago for the division lead.

Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA - TV: ESPN

The Dodgers split a doubleheader in the Bronx Sunday. Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw his first complete game in 66 major league starts to take the opener 8-2, striking out seven over nine innings on a four-hitter while Shohei Ohtani drove in two and Tommy Edman scored three times out of the nine-hole. The nightcap went the other way as the Dodgers used seven relievers behind opener Will Klein and managed just three hits as the Yankees scratched out a 2-1 win, Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s solo homer providing the deciding run.

Philadelphia’s Sunday was worse than a split. Nolan McLean struck out 10 and allowed only two hits over six scoreless innings, Francisco Lindor homered, doubled, singled and walked twice while driving in three, and the Mets rolled to a 6-1 win that gave New York its first series win in Philadelphia in nearly four years. Alec Bohm’s 12th homer was the lone Phillies highlight. Alan Rangel took the loss, charged with five runs on seven hits over four innings.

Both clubs turn right around into a marquee three-game set tonight, their fourth meeting of the year. The Dodgers roll in at 63-37 and comfortably out front in the NL West, while the Phillies sit second in the NL East at 55-45. Emmet Sheehan starts for LA at 4-6 with a 4.81 ERA, a rough season by his standards, and he’s up against a buzzsaw in Cristopher Sanchez, who’s been arguably the best pitcher in baseball not named Skenes at 11-4 with a 2.62 ERA and 144 strikeouts on the year. Trea Turner has been the engine for Philadelphia’s offense, sitting on 17 doubles and 12 home runs, and the Phillies have gone deep 128 times as a club, sixth-most in the National League. The Dodgers counter with even more thump at 129 team homers, third in the league.

Globe Life Field, Arlington, TX - TV: Chicago Sports Network, Rangers Sports Network

Chicago closed out its series in Toronto the right way Sunday. Sean Burke retired the first ten batters he faced, took a perfect game into the fourth before Nathan Lukes broke it up with an infield single, and finished with two hits allowed over six and two-thirds shutout innings, five strikeouts and one walk. Colson Montgomery drove in the first run with a sac fly and added his 24th homer of the year while Grant Taylor closed it out for his fifth save in a 3-0 win that took the series and put the White Sox alone in first place in the AL Central, one game up on Cleveland.

Texas didn’t fare nearly as well in its own series finale. Drake Baldwin went 5-for-5 with two home runs and Austin Riley also went deep twice as Atlanta beat the Rangers 8-5 to take that rubber match and the series, 2-1.

Chicago comes into tonight at 52-46 but still just 21-29 on the road, while Texas sits at 50-48 and considerably better at home, 24-22 there. Erick Fedde takes the ball for the White Sox, going up against Jacob deGrom, who’s been excellent at 7-5 with a 3.49 ERA and strikes out nearly 11 men per nine innings. DeGrom threw a bullpen session over the weekend after missing his last turn with a glute issue, and reports out of Texas have him lined up for tonight’s start as scheduled. Corey Seager remains out for the Rangers on the 10-day IL with a back issue, a real subtraction from the middle of that lineup.

Truist Park, Atlanta, GA — TV: BravesVision, Padres.TV

San Diego closed out its series in Kansas City about as loudly as possible Sunday. Ty France hit a grand slam and a solo shot, Jackson Merrill went deep twice of his own, and the Padres piled up a 19-2 win over the Royals.

Atlanta’s Sunday was its own show of force. Drake Baldwin, back from an oblique injury that had cost him nearly a month, went 5-for-5 with two homers, Austin Riley added two more of his own, and the Braves beat Texas 8-5 to take that series after dropping the middle game.

San Diego opens a four-game set tonight at 49-50 against a Braves club playing some of the best baseball in the league at 57-41. JP Sears gets the start for the Padres and has had a mixed year, sitting at a 5.03 ERA after allowing three runs on six hits over four and a third innings in his last outing against Toronto. Bryce Elder goes for Atlanta, and his season has been a story of two halves. He was outstanding through his first eleven starts at a 1.97 ERA before hitting a rough patch that included an eight-run second inning against Milwaukee his last time out.

Two bullpen notes worth knowing. San Diego’s closer Robert Suarez, 4-0 with a 0.56 ERA when healthy, remains on the 15-day IL with an elbow issue, though he’s been playing catch and trending in the right direction. On the other side, Atlanta manager Walt Weiss has said he hopes to get Ronald Acuna Jr. back from his hamstring strain before this homestand wraps up on July 23, so it’s worth checking the lineup card over the next few days.
