We didn’t have any plays on Thursday as the model was quite shy, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t any games to recap.

Here’s a quick rundown of how the five games we covered went.

Atlanta beat San Diego 6-5 behind a season-high-tying 11 strikeouts from Chris Sale, who allowed three runs in the second and nothing else across six innings. Dominic Smith’s three-run homer and solo shots from Michael Harris II and Ozzie Albies did the damage off bulk reliever Griffin Canning while Raisel Iglesias closed it out for his 21st save after Ty France’s two-run homer in the eighth briefly made it interesting.

The Braves took the series 3-1 and have won six of their last eight.

Minnesota needed twelve innings to beat Cleveland 3-1 in the finale of their four-game set, scoring twice in the 12th to escape with the split. Gavin Williams was brilliant for the Guardians in a losing effort, seven shutout innings with a season-high-tying 11 strikeouts and the fifth immaculate inning in franchise history, while Taj Bradley matched his own career long with seven innings of two-hit ball for the Twins.

Toronto avoided the sweep against Tampa Bay, riding seven strong innings from Shane Bieber in a 3-1 win. Louis Varland closed it out for his 21st save. Casey Legumina had opened for the Rays and allowed the game’s first run before Ian Seymour took the loss in relief.

Arizona beat St. Louis 10-6 in a makeup game from a June rainout, with Tyler Locklear going 3 for 4 with his first homer of the season and three RBI. Brandon Pfaadt worked six solid innings for his fifth straight win as the Diamondbacks improved to 9-2 in their last 11.

Detroit came from behind to beat Kansas City 4-3, with James Outman’s three-run homer in the seventh erasing a two-run deficit and Dillon Dingler adding the eventual winning run on an RBI double in the eighth. Randy Dobnak had thrown five shutout innings to start it for the Royals before the bullpen let it slip.

Citi Field, New York, NY - TV: WPIX, SportsNet LA

This is the opener of a three-game series between two clubs trending in different directions right now. The Dodgers are 65-38 and first in the NL West, but they’ve gone cold at the plate, batting just .220 over their last 10 games despite a .366 slugging mark, with only Tommy Edman (.394 in that stretch) really carrying the offense. LA is 5-5 over their last 10 games overall.

New York, sitting at 43-60, has actually been hot, hitting 13 homers and slugging .398 over its last 10 games.

Roki Sasaki takes the ball for LA at 3-5 with a 4.98 ERA, opposite Sean Manaea for the Mets at 2-5 with a 4.74 ERA. Manaea’s last time out was rough, four and two-thirds innings and four earned runs against Philadelphia on Saturday.

Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL - TV: Guardians.TV, Rays.TV

Both clubs are coming off series losses in their own way, Cleveland dropping the finale in extras to Minnesota and Tampa Bay getting shut down by Bieber to fall short of a sweep against Toronto. Cleveland sits at 54-50, still hanging around the edges of the AL wild-card picture, while Tampa Bay is 59-43 and has been the surprise story of the American League this summer, first in the AL East.

Junior Caminero has been the engine of the Rays’ offense all year, hitting .290 with 29 home runs and a .559 slugging percentage, numbers that put him squarely in the AL MVP conversation. Yandy Diaz has been just as productive setting the table in front of him, batting .308 with a .383 on-base percentage. Cleveland will be doing this without one of its own bats: Angel Martinez, who’s hitting .239 with 11 homers and 33 RBI, is on the 10-day IL with a foot injury.

Joey Cantillo takes the ball for the Guardians at 8-5 with a 3.74 ERA, making just his second career start against Tampa Bay. His only other outing against the Rays was five scoreless innings back in 2024. Shane McClanahan goes for Tampa Bay at 8-6 with a 3.16 ERA, and he’s coming off 10 days of rest after a rough outing his last time out, six runs allowed over five innings in a loss at Boston. It’s his first start since July 8, and he’ll be looking to find his rhythm again after the extended break.

Fenway Park, Boston, MA - TV: Apple TV+, TVA Sports

Boston’s remarkable run finally hit a wall, but not before making history. The Red Sox won the opener of Wednesday’s doubleheader against Baltimore to tie the 1946 club record with their 15th straight win, only to lose the nightcap 5-1 and fall just short of standing alone atop the franchise record book. Kyle Bradish, fresh off signing a five-year extension with the Orioles, held Boston to one run over six innings to end it. The Red Sox were off Thursday and return to Fenway at 52-49, still 8-2 over their last 10 games and firmly in the wild card mix. Willson Contreras has been the engine of the run, batting .353 over his last 10 games.

Toronto, meanwhile, snapped its own four-game skid Thursday with that win over Tampa Bay and sits at 47-56. Trey Yesavage takes the ball for the Blue Jays at 4-5 with a 3.78 ERA, opposite Patrick Sandoval for Boston, making just his third start of the season at 0-0 with a 4.82 ERA after missing time with a biceps issue. Boston will be doing it without Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Triston Casas, all out.

Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA - TV: Apple TV+

This is the first meeting of the year between these two teams. The Yankees sit at 57-45, the Phillies at 56-47, and both clubs are looking to build momentum heading into August. Will Warren takes the ball for New York at 7-4 with a 4.03 ERA, opposite Jesus Luzardo for Philadelphia at 9-4 with a 3.43 ERA, who was excellent his last time out, five innings and one run allowed against the Mets on Saturday.

Both lineups have had it going on lately. New York is slugging .449 over its last 10 games with 34 extra-base hits and Ben Rice has been the biggest reason why, batting .316 with a team-high four homers and 11 RBI in that stretch.

Philadelphia counters with its own thump, 12 home runs and a .381 slugging mark over its last 10 games, and Kyle Schwarber remains one of the most dangerous power threats in the sport regardless of matchup, sitting on 33 homers for the season.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, MD - TV: MASN, BravesVision

Atlanta carries the best record in baseball into Baltimore at 60-42, first in the NL East, while the Orioles sit at 50-53 but playing some of their best baseball of the season, 8-2 over their last 10 and fresh off ending Boston’s historic streak. Grant Holmes takes the ball for the Braves at 6-4 with a 3.70 ERA, though that number undersells how he’s pitching lately, a 1.90 ERA over his last five starts while Trevor Rogers goes for Baltimore at 6-7 with a 4.28 ERA.

Atlanta’s lineup has real thump up and down it, 136 team home runs on the year, second-most in the NL. Matt Olson leads the way hitting .267 with 25 doubles and 26 homers and Drake Baldwin has been the hottest bat on the roster lately, going 15 for 37 with four home runs over his last 10 games. Baltimore has kept pace offensively during its recent run, hitting 13 homers with 30 extra-base hits and a .410 slugging mark over its last 10 games, led by Taylor Ward’s .251 average, 20 doubles and seven homers.

This is also the first meeting of the season between these two clubs.
